How to install Cisco VPN Client on Windows 10

The legacy Cisco VPN Client is not officially supported on Windows 10, but with the following steps it can still be installed and used.

1. Uninstall any Cisco VPN Client currently installed on the system.
2. Uninstall any DNE (Deterministic Network Enhancer) update software currently installed on the system.
3. Restart the system.
4. Install and run winfix.exe from Citrix: it cleans up all traces of the DNE software.
5. Restart the system again.
6. Download and install the SonicWALL Global VPN Client, 32 or 64 bit according to your system. This installs the correct DNE software, which also works with the Cisco VPN Client.
7. Restart the system again.
8. Download and install Cisco Systems VPN Client 5.0.07.0290, 64 or 32 bit. Extract the MSI package from the installer and run it. You can also install a later version.
9. Open regedit and browse to the following key:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CVirtA

   Select the DisplayName value and change it as follows:

   • x86: from @oem8.ifn,%CVirtA_Desc%;Cisco Systems VPN Adapter to Cisco Systems VPN Adapter
   • x64: from @oem8.ifn,%CVirtA_Desc%;Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows to Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows

After the last step the Cisco VPN Client starts and connects normally.
